2009 Fort Hood Attack Victims Will Receive Purple Heart

Victims of the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood will receive either the Purple Heart, or its civilian counterpart, the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom. Secretary of the Army John McHugh made the announcement on Feb. 6, following a change by Congress concerning eligibility for the medals. In the attack by Major Nidal Hassan, 13 people were killed and more than 30 wounded.
