Weather Service Confirms Tornado Touch-Down in West Virginia

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down near Fairmont this week during a summer storm. The weather service says the EF-1 tornado traveled about 2 miles along a narrow path between the communities of Smithtown and Opekiska on Tuesday afternoon. The tornado carried winds of up to 100 miles per hour and snapped or uprooted numerous hardwood trees. A tree fell through the roof of a garage, causing minor damage. No injuries were reported. The New Martinsville Police Department is asking residents to be on the lookout for a scam circulating across the area.Police Chief Tim Cecil said several residents have received calls telling them they are entitled to "big refunds," or that they owe money that must be immediately paid to the IRS.
